Surveillance today is all pervasive, cutting across various industries. Be it for access control, traffic en-forcement or evidence recording, cameras are seen everywhere. The associated technology is transitioning from standalone, analog video output to networked & digital video, revolutionizing the manner in which video information is analyzed, archived, distributed, and managed. However seamless adoption to these smart systems poses several challenges in terms of cost & quality of deployment, lack of regulations, standardization  & performance evaluation.

Vision based Automatic Traffic Countingand Classification System

Gautham Gopalakrishna, Technical Director, MindTree Ltd.

Vehicle counting and classification is an important tool for the government and its planning departments for ensuring that the roads and highways that are built with future growth in mind. When it is automated it becomes a powerful tool for planning. Apart from providing an insight into the total number of current highway users, the data collected can be used to analyze peak and lean hours, traffic trends and most importantly to forecast growth. However the biggest usages of Automatic Traffic Counting and Classification are for the toll collection. Most of the existing ATCC systems are either induction loop based or pressure & weight based systems or a combination of both. While deploying such systems the public works department or the highway authority spends lot of time and money in changing the existing civil infrastructure to install the induction loops and piezo sensors mostly underground. However with the advent of High speed Mega Pixel surveillance cameras things are slowly beginning to change. Vision based ATCC systems are increasing gaining acceptance around the world.
