Enterprise Architecture Definition (EAD) is a sophisticated initiative that relates broadly to the practice of ‘business optimization’. It involves a detailed analysis of current as well as future structures and behavior of an organization’s people, processes, applications, information, and technology infrastructures. The objective is to ensure that organization units and sub-units are aligned amongst themselves - as well as with overall goals and strategic directions. EAD helps stakeholders make informed decisions to reshape the organization in terms of processes, applications, information organization, and technical infrastructure.
Enterprise architecture helps align IT to business strategies. On the business side, it deals with optimization of business processes, performance management, and organizational structures. On the IT side, it deals with optimization of IT architecture, standardization, and re-use.
EA initiatives are mostly tied to strategic initiatives such as business process re-engineering (BPR), standardization and consolidation of IT, organization-wide regulatory compliance requirements, and adoption of industry specific standards. Some organizations execute EA initiatives for enterprise-wide service enablement, as it helps identify composite services aligned with business processes, and drives re-use.
