The digitization of our personal lives is making it necessary for corporations to digitize their employees’ professional lives. The ability to use your phone to conduct transactions—not to mention instantly watch any movie you can think of—has raised employee expectations for the tools they need to perform their jobs. Organizations that do not provide proper tools are finding it difficult to hire top talent, and they face the risk of losing operational efficiencies to companies that are willing to invest.

Digitization represents an organizational change. Though change is necessary for recruiting new talent and keeping pace with the competition, it’s hard for established employees. When an enterprise introduces mobile applications for employee use, acceptance is the key. A successful organizational change requires that employees see the shift as a way to make their jobs easier. While learning a new process or technology can be hard, bringing influential employees into the development cycle will increase the likelihood of application and organizational change acceptance.

Because many mobile applications transform analog processes into digital workflows, they require prototyping prior to development and interim review by end users during development.

Engage employees in the process

Mindtree has experienced the most resistance to digital change from employees who were not invited to participate in this process. When major changes are introduced to employees without warning or input, we have seen them become suspicious and fearful. Those who do not traditionally use computers as part of their jobs see digitization as additional difficult work. To overcome this resistance, employees need to understand the entire digital process and have their responsibilities defined clearly in advance. Only by bringing these workers into the process early can you achieve a successful transition.

Prior to having a mobile application in their hands, end users may find it difficult to convey what will work, what they need and what they like. If you gather feedback from end users before development begins and continue to share iterations of the mobile application during development, you’ll close the process with a vetted application that’s ready for launch. This will increase acceptance and speed your organization’s digital transformation.

Go Agile to maximize development efficiency

Use of the Agile development methodology allows developers to present end users with iterative sprint demos. Demo feedback is then incorporated into the development cycle, which makes it easier to build a minimal viable product by the end of the process. The application can then be released. The same Agile method can be used to enhance the application over time.

Agile practices should be followed during the entire project, including application programming, UX/UI design, API integration, application hosting, monitoring and help desk support. This will enable developers to take a modular approach when architecting a client solution.

The most successful corporations see digital transformation as a journey with no end. Staying inclusive in your approach to digitization helps advancement take place in less time for less money—and a modular approach facilitates inclusion and establishes a solid foundation. The combination helps businesses anticipate shifting requirements.

When each functional module is integrated into the overall digital solution, adding or replacing a module doesn’t necessitate creating a new application. Instead, you can build a single “universal” application on your established foundation. This lets you monitor employee access to functionality, turning it on or off through identity and access management software.

Achieve success through empowerment

As a corporation goes through a cycle of change, new phases build on the success of earlier ones. Allowing employees to contribute to the application road map empowers business leaders with ownership. Then the change is no longer forced on them, but instead carried forward by them. The business becomes a champion of change, and IT can focus on making it all work.
